The course additionally provides information regarding workers’ rights, employer responsibilities, and how to file a complaint. The course is taught by an Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) authorized instructor. Students will receive a certificate verifying they have completed the class.  OSHA cards expire after five years according to the New York City Department of Buildings in order to work on any site.

Learning Outcomes

 

 

 

Introduction to OSHA (2 Hours)

Given current OSHA and industry information regarding construction worksite illnesses, injuries and/or fatalities, upon completion of this module, learners will:

  1. Identify the importance of OSHA
  2. Describe the history of safety and health regulation leading to the creation of OSHA and OSHA’s mission;
  3. Identify and describe new Department of Building’s safety regulations
  4. Identify worker rights under OSHA;
  5. Discuss PPE requirements for workers and employers
  6. Name employer responsibilities;
  7. Recall OSHA standards;
  8. Identify elements of OSHA inspections;
  9. Name safety and health resources
  10. List the steps about how to file a [NC1] complaint.

Managing Safety and Health (2 Hours)

Given current OSHA and industry information regarding construction worksite illnesses, injuries and/or fatalities, upon completion of this module, learners will:

  1. Identify ways of managing commitment and employee involvement
  2. Name the benefits of health and safety programs
  3. Identify the key elements to successful health and safety programs
  4. Describe OSHA/Employer partnership and alliance programs
  5. Identify the costs of accidents

Focus Four: Fall Protection (2 Hours)

Given current OSHA and industry information regarding construction worksite illnesses, injuries and/or fatalities, upon completion of this module, learners will:

  1. Identify types of fall hazards associated with workplace environments.
  2. Identify methods to eliminate or protect against fall hazards. 

Focus Four: Electrocution (2 Hours)

Given current OSHA and industry information regarding construction worksite illnesses, injuries and/or fatalities, upon completion of this module, learners will:

  1. Identify major electrocution hazards
  2. Describe types of electrocution hazards
  3. Protect him/herself from electrocution hazards
  4. Recognize employer requirements to protect workers from electrocution hazards

Focus Four: Struck-by (2 Hours)

Given current OSHA and industry information regarding construction worksite illnesses, injuries and/or fatalities upon completion of this module, learners will:

  1. Identify common struck-by hazards
  2. Describe types of struck-by hazards
  3. Protect themselves from struck-by hazards
  4. Recognize employer requirements to protect workers from struck-by hazards

Focus Four: Caught-in or Between (2 Hours)

Given current OSHA and industry information regarding construction worksite illnesses, injuries and/or fatalities, upon completion of this module, learners will:

  1. Identify common caught-in or -between hazards
  2. Describe types of caught-in or -between hazards
  3. Protect themselves from caught-in or -between hazards
  4. Recognize employer requirements to protect workers from caught-in or -between hazards

Personal Protective Equipment (2 Hours)

Given current OSHA and industry information regarding construction worksite illnesses, injuries and/or fatalities, upon completion of this module, learners will:

  1. Describe the hierarchy of controls as it relates to personal protective equipment.
  2. Identify types of personal protective equipment utilized in construction.
  3. Explain personal protective equipment training requirements.
  4. Explain the responsibilities of employers and employees regarding personal protective equipment.

Stairways and Ladders (2 Hours)

Given current OSHA and industry information regarding construction worksite illnesses, injuries and/or fatalities, upon completion of this module, learners will:

  1. Identify types of stairways and ladders used at a construction site.
  2. Describe types of hazards (i.e., slips, trips, and falls) associated with the use of stairs and ladders.
  3. Describe protective methods used to prevent stairway and ladder hazards.

Recognize employer requirements to protect workers from stairway and ladder hazards.

Health Hazard in Construction (2 Hours)

Given current OSHA and industry information regarding construction worksite illnesses, injuries and/or fatalities, upon completion of this module, learners will:

  1. Identify common health hazards.
  2. Describe types of common health hazards.
  3. Apply health hazard protection methods.
  4. Recognize employer requirements to protect workers from health hazards in construction, including hazards communication program.
